ou might not imagine the harshest soils of the Mojave giving rise to anything vaguely floral, much less these delicate, vividly-yellow blooms. In fact, the Las Vegas Bearpoppy thrives in the driest parts of the Mojave, especially in areas with high gypsum content, which are characterized by crumbly soil with few nutrients and high salt levels (plants like these are called “gypsophiles”).
But thrive she does — a reminder that even the (seemingly) most inhospitable parts of the desert are life-giving to some our of neighbors. In recent decades, our Bearpoppy has been threatened by development, and was listed as “critically endangered” by the state. The Center for Biological Diversity says that the flower has disappeared from over half of its previous habitat in Clark County. All of the Las Vegas Bearpoppies at the Springs Preserve are fenced in to protect this rare flower, and germination studies are underway to find new ways to keep the Las Vegas Bearpoppy blooming.
Las Vegas Bearpoppy
Sciencey name: Arctomecon californica
Named for: The bear paw-shape of its petals
One last factoid: The Las Vegas Bearpoppy has at least 23 pollinators, but one of the most important is the specialized Mojave poppy bee, a threatened native bee species.
