Things come and go so often in Las Vegas, it’s almost surprising to see a form of entertainment not only stick around for more than three decades, but grow in size and stature. The Las Vegas Men’s Chorus is celebrating 32 years in Las Vegas, closing out its latest season with “Broadway Our Way” at the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall on Sunday, June 29.
“We're celebrating everything about Broadway — how it's an inclusive environment and brings everyone together,” says artistic director Ryan Duff. “The world needs happy singing, and that's what the show is all about.”
The choir started out as a small operation, advertising with flyers and performing in bars. Over the years, the group outgrew every rehearsal space and performed at places like the Smith Center and Latin Grammys while developing a strong membership base of support.
Now more than a hundred singers strong, the Las Vegas Men's Chorus embraces its presence in the LGBTQ+ community — there’s a rainbow treble clef in the logo, after all — but it would be too broad of a description to call the group a “gay chorus.”
“ We do have members in the chorus who do not identify that way,” Duff says. “ If you want to be inclusive, you have to include everyone, right? I think we do a great job of opening the doors to everyone.”
The year-long season breaks down into three cycles with auditions held before each one. Some singers have long resumes. Others have none. Experience helps, but it’s not a requirement. Either way, the audition process is designed to be low-pressure and user-friendly.
“There is no sight reading component. You can prepare something or just sing ‘Happy Birthday’ with me at the piano,” Duff says. “If you have a love for singing and a passion for giving back to the community, we have a home for you.”
Tickets begin at $30 for “Broadway Our Way,” which starts at 4 p.m. at Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall (UNLV) on June 29. The Las Vegas Men’s Chorus will also perform a free unplugged preview concert at the Clark County Library at 4 p.m on June 22.
