The July 4th holiday is coming up and celebrating America’s independence in Las Vegas can be, well, confusing. Fireworks are best left to the professionals, but that doesn't stop people from shooting off their own explosives in parks and backyards throughout the valley. Are they legal? The answer is complicated.

 fireworks go on sale Sunday, June 28 and are available until Saturday, July 4. These are the only fireworks approved for the general public by Clark County, sold at pop-up booths in the parking lots of grocery stores, shopping centers, and other businesses throughout the valley to benefit nonprofits. The products are limited to sparklers, snakes, smokeballs, or to put it simply, stuff that doesn’t leave the ground.

More dangerous fireworks like Roman Candles, Cherry Bombs, and Bottle Rockets are legally sold outside Clark County in some of our favorite Nye County destinations (like 

) as well as tribal territory (most notably, the Moapa Paiute Travel Plaza near Valley of Fire). However, it’s illegal to set them off back in Vegas, even though you can’t ignore the sight of them illuminating the sky. In an odd twist, it’s even against the law to set fireworks off in Pahrump, except for a single

🍽️ The Best Excuse to Eat Out This Month

 runs June 1 through 12 and it is one of the tastiest times of year in Las Vegas. Dining spots throughout the valley are offering special prix fixe menus, with proceeds supporting Three Square Food Bank's mission to fight hunger in Southern Nevada. It’s a great opportunity to check out what’s new at a neighborhood restaurant like Bar Boheme or get a deal at pricer Strip destinations like Cote. Las Vegas museums are having a moment. The Mob Museum kicks off its

 opens in the Arts District with immersive exhibits and rare memorabilia celebrating America's most legendary daredevil.

Las Vegas is known for great entertainment — and more than a few shows are taking place outdoors this year. Whether it’s by a pool or on a mountain, the following places know how to mix music and scenery together in one perfect package.

On any given night, you’ll see cover bands performing on multiple stages at the Fremont Street Experience. The biggest acts, however, are reserved for the 

 concert series, which is always free with performances among the bright lights of Fremont Street casinos. This year’s lineup includes names like Crossfade with Trapt (May 30), Fuel (June 13), Finger Eleven (June 27), George Birge (July 4), Sleeping With Sirens (July 11), Mayday Parade (Aug. 8), Story of the Year (Aug. 22), Protoje (Sept. 12), Lauren Alaina and Carly Pearce (Sept. 26), and The Used with Maggie Lindemann (Oct. 10). Fremont Street Experience also hosts 

 concerts with Madden Metcalf up next on May 28.

 is celebrating 36 years in Las Vegas with nighttime performances at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater by Jazz Funk Soul (May 23), Kayla Waters (May 30), and Al Di Meola (June 6) rounding out the season. The series has reintroduced a ticketless free format this year, but demand is high, so showing up early is a good idea.

, a new concert series by The Pool, transforming the property’s outdoor pool deck into an open-air live music venue. Inspired by the centuries-old tradition of decorating graves with flowers, Memorial Day had its beginnings in the aftermath of the Civil War. Today, the observance takes place on the last Monday in May to honor those who have died during military service.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan of the Grand Army Republic (an organization of Union veterans) issued 

, designating May 30 as a day “of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves” of soldiers who were killed during the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, the date was chosen to ensure the availability of “the choicest flowers of springtime.”

New York was the first state to designate Memorial Day as a holiday in 1873. All Union states followed suit by 1890. Congress passed the 

 in 1968 to designate the last Monday in May as Memorial Day, calling on the people of the United States to remember fallen soldiers and pray for permanent peace. It officially went into effect in 1971.

Why We Observe Memorial Day in May

Las Vegas is entering those months when outdoor fun is better — and more tolerable — after dark. So it’s no surprise that the valley has a wide variety of outdoor movie experiences during spring and summer. Some are by the pool. A few are free. And no matter which flicks float your boat, it’s better than doomscrolling on the couch.

Where to See Outdoor Movies in Las Vegas

. Not so much the sandwiches, but the flavor profile repackaged in unexpected ways. I even wrote a story about PB&J Old Fashioneds years ago for a defunct publication named Supercall (although the accompanying 

 was reprinted elsewhere). But my favorite place for peanut butter and jelly is on a good burger. Sounds weird, but it totally works — and the following restaurants agree.

, a locals-oriented sports bar by Station Casinos, has locations in North Las Vegas, Henderson, and the West Valley — and all serve the PB&J Smash Burger. The recipe has a spicy kick, thanks to a house-made raspberry-jalapeno jam. A pair of short rib-and-chuck patties get smashed on the grill for a nice crust while both halves of the bun are smeared with peanut butter and griddled until golden brown. The kitchen adds it all together with pickles and American cheese for one indulgent, delicious bite.

Whether in Silverado Ranch or the Northwest Valley, 

 has the P.B. & Jealousy, a favorite on the menu since day one. It layers a flame-grilled angus beef patty, thick-cut bacon, melted peanut butter, and strawberry jelly on a honey wheat bun. (Feel free to substitute a 50/50 patty — half beef, half ground bacon — at no extra charge for extra smokiness.)

The Ellis Island Casino is getting in on the act too. 

 just introduced a new menu that includes a PB&J Burger with bacon, cheddar cheese, and peanut butter jam with the crunchy kick of fried jalapenos. Wash it down with one of Ellis Island’s own craft beers. (I recommend the amber ale.)

 is best known for its pet-friendly policies, welcoming doggies to hang out with their owners on large covered patios with locations in 

. Bring your pup and ask for the PB & J Burger, which combines a half-pound burger with peanut butter, grape jelly, candied bacon, and havarti cheese with lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles.
