Determining if Las Vegas is a dangerous place is more complicated than it seems. Search online and you’ll come across a wave of stats — old and new — that aren’t always easy to sort out and don’t always tell the entire story.

🚨 More Dangerous Than Ever?

If Las Vegas just feels less safe than it used to be, you’re not alone. We see basic household items locked up at stores like Walmart and reports about mail carriers being attacked. If you’re connected to neighborhood-focused social media apps like NextDoor and Ring, posts asking “Were those gunshots?” pop up almost daily. Politicians, meanwhile, never miss an opportunity to blame the opposing party for whatever’s wrong with society, often exaggerating the state of crime and safety to win over voters.

🧐 What Do the Numbers Say?

Violent crime is actually down. According to the latest annual report by Las Vegas Metro Police, personal crimes (murder, assault, sexual offences) were down 5% from 2022 to 2023, while property crimes (larceny, robbery, burglaries, motor theft) were up nearly 3%.

Over a 10-year period, personal crimes were down 39% (from 59,342 to 36,455), while property crimes were up 45% (52,040 to 75,670) — almost an inverse reflection. Of course, we have more property now — homes, cars, and that kind of stuff — to match a growing population, so the latter makes sense. The former could be credited to suburban growth and the rise of Las Vegas as a less-transient, family-oriented community.

⛺ The Homeless Factor

Las Vegas is a growing city — and that comes with both perks and problems. The homeless population is increasing (and more visible than ever) and while that doesn’t necessarily correlate to a rise in crime, it contributes to a perception of a society “out of order.” Homeless camps setting off bonfires near homes or popping up near schools only underscore unease among the general public and raise questions about drug use and mental health among the unhoused.

🚘 What About the Roads?

Traffic fatalities are up, but have been consistent (between 150 and 160 annual deaths) over three years (2021-2023). Pedestrians count for the most fatalities with “pedestrian error” the top cause of fatalities.

🏘️ Which Neighborhoods are the Safest?

Locals know to be cautious of areas like Twain and Swenson, certain stretches of Boulder Highway, North Las Vegas near Nellis, and the more downtrodden parts of Downtown. Nobody spends much time walking around Naked City near The Strat and Huntridge Circle Park has been closed for years in response to criminal activity.

As recently as 2023, Henderson was ranked the third-safest large city in the country and newer neighborhoods in Summerlin, the Southwest, Centennial Hills, and yes, even North Las Vegas have a reputation for safe, family-friendly environments.

  • Sure, we’re simplifying things and this subject deserves a larger discussion beyond what I can include in this newsletter. So listen to our City Cast Las Vegas episode that asks an important question: “How Safe is Las Vegas, Really?”
