Your Guide to August in Las Vegas

00:00:00

There’s more to August than “turn around, don’t drown” in Las Vegas. As we make it through the heat and monsoon season, a relatively quiet month doesn’t have to be too quiet. Check out the following ideas for having fun around town.

🏆 Eat, Drink, and Play Pickleball

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in Las Vegas, but most courts are outdoors. The Fontainebleau is offering some relief from the heat with the first annual Las Vegas Pickleball Cup Aug. 27 - Sept. 1. Championship action takes place in the resort’s ballroom, but the general public is welcome to have fun too, especially during “Late Night Pickle” games with booze included.

🎙️ Enjoy a Celebration Fit for a King

This month marks 47 years since the passing of Elvis Presley and tributes are taking place throughout Las Vegas. The Westgate (where the music icon kicked off his famous residency 55 years ago) has regular performances of The King Comes Home (a tribute act Tuesdays-Thursdays), My Brother Elvis: An Evening with David Stanley on Aug. 21, and American Trilogy, a music festival covering three eras of Elvis Aug. 23 - 24. Need more? The Composer’s Room has A Celebration of Life for Elvis, featuring Big Elvis on Aug. 16 and the Little Vegas Chapel has “Miss Elvis'' wedding packages Aug. 9 - 17.

🏅 Cheer and Scream During the Olympics

The Summer Games in Paris continue until August 11. You can cheer on Olympians from Las Vegas at one of the best sports bars in town and watch the debut of breakdancing during a free Breaking 360° Viewing Party inside the Portal at AREA15 on Aug. 10.

🍺 Drink Free Beer at the Mob Museum

Beer is even better when it’s free. The Underground at the Mob Museum is giving those with Nevada ID a Big Al’s Ale on the house with museum admission (which happens to be discounted for locals btw) throughout the entire month of August.

🤠 Boot Scoot to Country Faves

Country fans have lots of options this month, from Morgan Wallen (with Jelly Roll opening) at Allegiant Stadium Aug. 8 - 9 to Carrie Underwood at the Resorts World Theater Aug. 14 - 24. Brett Young also plays Resorts World Aug. 2 — not to be confused with Chris Young at the same venue Aug. 10 🧐 Then again you can just party by the pool with Dustin Lynch at the Red Rock Resort Aug. 2 or the Country in the Cove festival at Cowabunga Bay Aug. 18.

⛰️ Head to Higher Ground

Sometimes extra elevation is all you need to take the edge off the summer temperatures in Las Vegas. Cottonwood Station is a charming restaurant in Blue Diamond (an area that The Town magazine editor Melinda Sheckells says is perfect for watching the Perseid meteor shower with minimal light pollution). Just minutes away, the Super Summer Theatre has productions of “School of Rock The Musical” and “A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder” this month at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.
