The Best Local Grocery Stores to Dine In

00:00:00

Back in my distant youth, eating at a grocery store felt like an emergency, but as a bonafide adult, I’ve become acquainted with the luxury of dining al-mercato. To be clear, I’m not referring to stale sushi to go. I’m talking about an honest, made-to-order meal. We called up contributor and daring food eater Brent Holmes to talk about such delicacies. Here are his recommendations.

That's where you get your food. It's handled by professionals, but beyond that, there are some really incredible culinary options at your local grocery center.Brent Holmes, Writer and City Cast Contributor

Latin American Picks

The world knows no better olfactory heaven than the smell of fresh tortillas, a treat you can find at Cardenas Markets. Stop by on a Tuesday and order $1.25 tacos made with fresh tortillas. There are several locations but Brent recommends the one by the Meadows Mall. “It’s like a cathedral to Mexican food.”

If you’re looking for a broader Latin American selection, El Super near Lake Mead is the move. Brent’s choice is the croquetas, a deep-fried variety of French croquettes filled with shredded meat and potatoes, popular in Caribbean cuisine. At 75 cents apiece, you can chow down to your heart’s desire.

Asian Picks

Good Filipino food can be hard to find, but not at Grill City inside Seafood City. Kick things off with a calamansi lime juice. “It's gonna be like lemonade, but on ‘roids,” says Brent. Follow it up with a grilled barbecue skewer or the grilled mackerel.

For Chinese fare, check out 168 Market, a much more authentic version of the food counter at Panda Express. And if you’re craving Indian food, pick up the chana bhatura from Rani’s World Foods. “[It’s] worth taking home every time,” Brent exclaims.

Give one of these delectable spots a try on your next grocery store run.
