Super Summer Theatre just launched a new season, featuring productions of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid,“ “School of Rock The Musical,” and “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder.” The theater is inside Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, where guests can stretch out on the meadow, surrounded by the scenery of Red Rock Canyon. Production Chairman Christy Miller shares some thoughts on how far the series has come since its humble beginnings in 1976.

Tell me about the theater’s mission to be community-dirven.

“We’re completely a non-profit. None of us get paid. We pay for everything we need for the productions, but overall, everybody on that stage is there because they love theater and want to give back to the community. Some people actually work on the Strip and take time off because they’ve always wanted to do a particular role.”

What are some of the ways the technology and the stage itself have evolved over the years?

“When we first started, we had a platform and hung sheets in the trees where we had quick changes — and now we now have a full theater. The biggest improvements over the last 20 years have been in lighting and audio. The quality has grown a hundred percent.

“Back in the day, we handed a mic around to each other and had a spotlight and maybe a couple of lights with color. Now we have moving, shaking effects. For our first show this summer, ‘The Little Mermaid,’ we even have a small video wall. We have brand new spotlights this year and they’re amazing.”

Any advice or insider tips on what people should bring or do when coming to see a show?

“Don't bring any more electronic devices than necessary. Bring a picnic blanket, extra blanket or jacket, just in case you need it. Walk the park, get a little exercise, come back, settle in, and watch an amazing show under the stars.”

Tickets are on sale for all three productions, beginning at $20. You can also buy tickets and tables for Super Summer Soiree, a fundraising gala at the Palms on September 26.
