More police die by suicide than in the line of duty in America. And in a 24-hour, vice-friendly city like ours, it’s easy for officers to deal with trauma in destructive ways, says retired LVMPD Captain Harry Fagel, a 20+ year veteran of the force. Today, Harry and Dayvid Figler get into a tough but important conversation about the problems with policing culture, and how it affects both officers and the communities they’re sworn to protect. Plus, Harry shares his thoughts on how the incoming sheriff’s administration could curb police deaths and help make lasting changes.

A quick warning: As you can probably tell, this episode discusses suicide and self-harm at length. It also includes some graphic depictions of things officers encounter in their jobs. It’s not for everyone.

If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, please, please talk to someone. It’s easy: Just call or text 988. You can also chat online and find more resources at 988lifeline.org.
