Your Daily Guide

☀️ Here at City Cast Las Vegas, we don’t just talk about the news. We spread the word on people making our community a better place to live. This week alone, you have:

  • 🏁 A celebration at F1 Arcade Thursday for UNSHAKEABLE, an organization that helps women overcome traumatic events to find success in the workforce
  • 🎨 Food is Art at The Strat on Friday to benefit ALS of Nevada
  • 🥕 A new farmers market to help revive the struggling Huntridge Park on Saturday
  • 🍽️ Picnic in the Alley, which celebrates women in the culinary arts, on Sunday in the Arts District

We include daily listings of things to do in our newsletter, but City Cast Las Vegas Neighbors receive a week’s worth of events every Monday in a special members-only email 👀 It’s a perk that allows Las Vegas locals to plan the week ahead — and discover neighborhood activities that you might not find elsewhere.

Plan the Week with Local Events

City Cast Las Vegas Neighbors also get ad-free listening, bonus podcast segments, invitations to members-only events, and — during our fall campaign drive this week — a special Vegas-themed dad hat 🧢

First Up: Justice for a Kidnapped Flamingo

A natural habitat outside a hotel with palm trees, grass and water.

Please respect this place 🦩 (The Flamingo Wildlife Habitat/Caesars Entertainment)

Canadian tourist Mitchell Fairbarn was found guilty of animal cruelty after snatching Peachy, a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo from the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat on the Las Vegas Strip — and bringing the exotic bird back to his hotel room.

His defense? He was “drunk” and “stupid.” Mitchell, who was in town for the Con Expo, claimed to have consumed 30 to 40 beers over 24 hours leading up to the incident.

Mitchell will be sentenced on Dec. 1 and faces up to four years in prison on the felony charge alone. Peachy, who was injured during the incident, has recovered, but continues to show signs of anxiety during examinations.

Sadly, this isn’t the first time an exotic bird was attacked by a tourist at the habitat. Justin Teixeira served a 190-day prison boot camp sentence at the Indian Springs Correctional Facility after beheading Turk, a helmeted guineafowl, in 2012.

The four-acre Flamingo Wildlife Habitat opened back in 1995 as an oasis on the Strip for not only flamingos, but also swans, ducks, koi, and other animals. There was even a period when African penguins, already suited to warm weather, were among the most popular residents.

Yet the Flamingo Wildlife Habitat is much more than just a free attraction. It’s recognized as a Certified Wildlife Habitat with accreditation from the Zoological Association of America for its role in caring for animals that can’t always survive on their own in the wild.

What Las Vegas's Talking About

🎁 A Side Hustle for Christmas

Amazon is opening up more than 3,000 jobs in Nevada for the winter holiday season — and most of ‘em are in the Las Vegas Valley. [KLAS]

🤑 Is It Hip to Tip on the Strip?

Clark County isn’t just cracking down on aggressive tipping requests at the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. It’s also issuing warnings on the Strip with messages on digital marquees stating that “tipping is not mandatory” for “watching performers” or “taking a photo.” (As always, please take care of bartenders, servers, casino dealers, tour guides, and others who rely on tips in the hospitality industry. Strippers too 👍) [KVVU]

💰 Dead Las Vegan ‘Donates’ to Campaign

MAGA Republican David Flippo, who’s running to represent Northern Nevada in Congress, accepted $7,000 from Marilynn Mack, which exceeded the limit allowed. So his campaign credited $3,500 to the donor’s mother, Las Vegas philanthropist Joyce Mack. But here’s the thing — Joyce died in 2024. She was married to Jerry Mack, a major UNLV donor whose name is the same one on the Thomas & Mack Center. [Raw Story/The Wall Street Journal/UNLV]

  • Rep. Mark Amodei, whose retirement opened up the seat, says he will "absolutely not” vote for Flippo to replace him, despite being a fellow Republican. [Politico]

🗳️ DMV Expands Election Season Hours

The Nevada DMV is expanding hours and walk-in services for those seeking assistance with voter registration ahead of the midterm election on Nov. 3. [KSNV]

  • Early voting is already underway and All Voting Is Local joins City Cast Las Vegas to address questions and concerns about casting your ballot in Nevada during election season. Today’s episode also looks at the renewed controversy over tipping in tourist areas and yet another catchphrase to promote Las Vegas. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

More Las Vegas Events

📬 We have a nice note to share from Greg M., who recently signed up to be a City Cast Las Vegas Neighbor.

"I love reading your newsletters and enjoy knowing about events that are taking place … But I also like that you do not stop there and explore topics that are impactful to life here in Las Vegas. And I have found you to be balanced in a way that is often hard to do."

Thanks Greg! We hope more of you join in and become City Cast Las Vegas Neighbors too. Our fall membership drive is beginning to wind down and we still have a long way to go in reaching our goal 🙏
