🌆 Las Vegas is beautiful at dusk … even when traffic cones photobomb the shot during F1 construction.

What Las Vegas's Talking About

🗳️ Early Voting is Underway

Saturday was the first day of early voting for midterm elections in Nevada. It runs until Oct. 30. Cast your vote in person or deposit a mail ballot at any voting center throughout Clark County. Otherwise, Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

  • Study up on our guide to early voting. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]
  • The race for governor is dominating Nevada headlines this year. Gov. Joe Lombardo is touting his record on education and wants to increase per-student funding by 12% in his two-year budget proposal. Challenger Aaron Ford is running on his record as attorney general and just received an endorsement from Barack Obama. [KSNV/KRXI]
  • We took a closer look at the gubernatorial race, which remains a dead heat in the polls. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
  • Mayoral races are taking place in Henderson and North Las Vegas. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]
  • And if this all seems to be too much, head to Henderson City Hall, where youngsters can get a taste for politics and vote for something that really matters: their favorite flavor of ice cream. The winner in 2024, Cookies & Cream, declined to run for reelection 🍨 [KLAS]

🤖 Hospitality Without Humans

The Rio is using technology by Traversing.ai to connect ChatGPT with existing hotel systems, allowing guests to check room availability, browse pool cabanas, locate restaurant hours, and contact hotel departments without making a call or clicking through the hotel’s website. The Culinary Union isn’t happy about this stuff, saying automation threatens the careers of those in the hospitality industry. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

🐶 A New Way to Help Lost Pets

Silverado Ranch Community Center now has a self-serve, 24-hour microchip scanner to help anyone determine the owner of a lost pet. So far, Clark County has three of these scanners with plans to roll out more. [KSNV]

🍽️ The Beauty of Solo Dining in Las Vegas

I’ve actually hung out with my laptop at the counter of Double Zero Pie & Pub to write this newsletter on more than one occasion. So I’m stoked that general manager and head pizzaiola Erica Bell joined the City Cast Las Vegas team to discuss the underrated joy of dining solo in Las Vegas and weigh in on some of the best places to be alone with your thoughts, a good drink, and something to eat from a great chef. Clark County Addresses Harassment at the ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ Sign

Here are the rules at the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign: There are no rules. Yes, there’s usually a line that people follow out of respect and politeness — but it’s not official. And anyone offering to take your photo in exchange for any form of payment is not directly affiliated with operations at the landmark.

Some of those hustlers have become more aggressive over the years while trying to pull people out of line. In response, Clark County plans to add warning signs that say tipping is voluntary and not required, along with guidance on reporting harassment. The county may also increase the presence of police and business licensing officials. (It’s technically illegal if a photographer demands payment without a proper license.)

Tipping culture has become a source of contention in Las Vegas, especially in recent years. Costumed performers on the Strip and Fremont Street are notoriously aggressive in demanding high-dollar tips after offering to pose for photos. Just last month, two “showgirls” were arrested for fighting with tourists in front of Planet Hollywood over a $20 tip. According to the police report, the women demanded a larger tip of up to $180.

As a hospitality destination, Las Vegas has relied on tips for years — a practice that’s more established in traditional settings like bars, restaurants, tours, and casino floors. With that said, Nevada tips 18.2% on average, making it the fourth-lowest tipping state in the country.

But back to the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign … In an ironic twist, the landmark was designed to be free for everyone. While YESCO owns the physical sign and leases it to Clark County, the design itself was never trademarked, allowing anyone to use it on art, T-shirts, coffee mugs, or anything else without royalty concerns.

So. Nevada – Thank You for Conserving Water!

Over the past two decades, the community has collectively saved 200 billion gallons of water. Residents and businesses follow the mandatory seasonal watering schedule and replace grass with water smart landscaping. Golf courses operate within water budgets and utilize advanced irrigation technology. Just seven percent of the valley's water use is from resorts, which invest in water-efficient equipment. In addition, developers follow strict water-smart building codes inside and out.

Thank you, Southern Nevada! Keep conserving.

More Las Vegas Events

♥️ We want to give a big shout out to Carole B., who just signed up to be a City Cast Las Vegas Neighbor and left us a nice note that said in part…

"My husband and I moved here seven years ago. Having just been introduced to your local podcast, it was a no-brainer to raise my hand in support … As a retired writer, I appreciate your connecting the community through word and voice . . . and most of all, I appreciate how your platform feels like 'home,' especially over that first cup of coffee in the morning when I open my IPAD."

Welcome to the Neighborhood, Carole! We also want to thank Gray C., Caryn T., Brandon A., and Karen W. for signing up as our fall membership drive continues.

Your dad hats are on the way! 🧢
