What Las Vegas's Talking About

🚨 Murder Victim in Lake Mead Barrel Identified

Remember that body found inside a barrel at Lake Mead in 2022? Well, investigators have now identified the victim as Edward Jackson (or “Buddy” to friends), who was last seen in Arkansas in the early ‘80. At this point, he has no known ties to Las Vegas or the mob, although Jackson had a criminal record for arson and fraud in Salt Lake City. He was killed by gunshot. [KTNV]

⚖️ Punishment Handed Out in Tesla Arson

The Las Vegas man who shot up a Tesla collision center, set a few vehicles on fire, and spray painted “resist” on the windows was sentenced to five years in prison. Prosecutors actually wanted 20 years, but the judge didn’t see eye to eye with them on terrorism charges. [KTNV]

💰 Casino Bucks in Ballroom Blitz

The Adelson family donated $25 million (the highest allowed by law) to President Trump’s ballroom project on a bulldozed wing of the White House. So if you spent money at the Venetian or Palazzo between 1992 and 2022, consider yourself an indirect donor. [Washington Post]

⚽ Goodbye, Cashman Field

Saturday’s soccer match between the Las Vegas Lights FC and Lexington SC will be the last-ever event at Cashman Field before the land is repurposed into a residential community. The night also includes fireworks, a light show, and giveaways for fans who arrive early. Originally Elks Stadium in 1957, the venue was the home of minor-league baseball over the years, but also hosted boxing, football, and concerts. [KLAS]

🚧 Arena Proposed Near Allegiant Stadium

We’re getting close to a final decision on an NBA team in Vegas. A bidding investment group led by Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie and her husband is getting some extra juice with the involvement of Silver Lake co-CEO Egon Durban, who already has a stake in the Raiders. They want to build an arena for the team near Allegiant Stadium to create a sports and entertainment district. (Please throw in a parking garage while you’re at it 🙏) [Sports Business Journal]

So. Nevada – Thank You for Conserving Water!

Over the past two decades, the community has collectively saved 200 billion gallons of water. Residents and businesses follow the mandatory seasonal watering schedule and replace grass with water smart landscaping. Golf courses operate within water budgets and utilize advanced irrigation technology. Just seven percent of the valley's water use is from resorts, which invest in water-efficient equipment. In addition, developers follow strict water-smart building codes inside and out.

Thank you, Southern Nevada! Keep conserving.
