Groundbreaking Set for Underfunded 1 October Memorial

Today marks nine years since the deadliest mass shooting in modern history took place on the Las Vegas Strip, targeting an outdoor crowd at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival. More than 1,000 rounds were fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel, killing 58 people that day. Two more died from their injuries in later years, bringing the official total to 60, excluding the shooter, a Nevada man who turned the weapon on himself. Nearly 900 additional victims were injured. • The memorial has been in the planning stages for years, but remains underfunded. An early design was budgeted for nearly $70 million. A revised plan brought the cost down to $34 million, but the project remains $7 million short. Construction is moving forward anyway, setting up a potential scenario where funds run dry before the final phase. [Nevada Independent]

  • The Clark County Commission approved $10 million for the project. The LVCVA contributed $5 million. MGM Resorts donated the land. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
  • This is in addition to more than $32 million that was raised for the victims, including nearly $12 million in public contributions on GoFundMe. [Nevada Independent]
  • “Remembering 1 October,” an exhibit by the Clark County Museum, is in the Rotunda Gallery at the Clark County Government Center through October 8.
  • The public is invited to further honor the victims by forming a human chain at 8:30 p.m. tonight on the corner of Ali Baba Lane and Giles Street.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights are teaming up with Vitalant for a memorial blood drive outside City National Arena in Downtown Summerlin, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What Las Vegas's Talking About

✋ Henderson Says No to ICE

Henderson Police blocked a proposal that would allow ICE to expand its presence and add a new building at the Eldorado Valley Regional Training Facility. The 250-acre site between Henderson and Boulder City is already used by ICE officers for training, but the new plan would override existing agreements and allow the federal agency to rent out its part of the operation. [Nevada Independent]

  • The facility took five years to build and includes six shooting ranges, an emergency vehicle driving course, and a 150-acre area for explosives training. [KLAS]
  • City Cast Las Vegas took a closer look at the situation in today’s news roundup. The episode also reveals what the school board actually does and looks ahead to a busy weekend with our top picks for events and activities. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

🤖 A.I. Teaching in Nye County

How much is an “A” in Pahrump worth anyway? Nye County schools are testing out Magic School, an artificial intelligence program that helps teachers plan lessons and grade assignments. It also gives students “feedback” before turning in essays 🤔 [KVVU]

🤡 Oldest Sign on the Strip Breaks Down

The 123-foot tall Lucky the Clown marquee at Circus Circus has gone dark. The resort says it’s taking bids to fix the sign, which dates back to 1968, and bring Lucky back to life. An effort is also underway to get the clown listed on the National Register of Historic Places. [Vital Vegas]

🏀 Season Ends for Somebody Tonight

If Jack Smith enjoys watching Caitlin Clark play basketball in Atlanta Maryland, he would’ve loved Tuesday night’s game in Indiana. The Fever beat the Aces, setting up a deciding Game 3 tonight in the first round of the WNBA playoffs at the Michelob Ultra Arena. [USA Today/ESPN]
