| What Las Vegas's Talking About |
| 🚨 Human Remains Found in Lake Mead | MPD and the National Park Service responded to a report of human remains found in Boulder Beach, about seven miles from downtown Boulder City on Sunday. MPD is no longer involved in the investigation, and according to a parks service spokesperson, the incident is, as of now, considered “non-criminal.” [CBS News] | | 🏛️ U.S. Attorney for Nevada Was Unlawfully Appointed | A federal appeals court unanimously ruled Monday that Nevada conservative Sigal Chattah was unlawfully appointed as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Nevada. Chattah was first appointed as interim U.S. attorney last year by President Trump, who later extended her term by promoting her to first assistant U.S. attorney. The Trump administration can choose to appeal this ruling by going to the U.S. Supreme Court. [The Nevada Independent] | | 🏈 Allegiant Stadium to Get a New Plaza | The Raiders are proposing a $158 million plaza that includes a platform from Hacienda Avenue over the Lot C parking area. The platform would provide a covered area for rideshares and become a home for a new Vegas Loop station. This would mean the 20,000 people who use Hacienda to get to Allegiant from the Strip will no longer need to walk all of Allegiant Stadium Way to get to the venue. [Las Vegas Review-Journal] | | 📱 Prediction App Kalshi and NV Gaming Control Board Are Not Okay | The Nevada Gaming Control Board is asking a judge to fine Kalshi, the prediction market app, $120,000 a day, and Kalshi is not happy about it. The board claims the app is failing to refuse service to Nevadans, while Kalshi attorneys claim the app is being unfairly targeted. Anyone want to predict how this is going to go? | The Beauty and Quirky Charm of St. George is Worth a Road Trip |
| | St. George is named after Brigham Young’s cousin. (Luis Sinco/Getty Images) |
| There’s a place where the Mojave Desert, Great Basin, and Colorado Plateau meet. It’s called St. George — and Southwest Utah’s largest city is an engaging combination of landscapes and activities. Get ready to hit the road. It’s less than a two-hour drive from Las Vegas. | | ⛺ Historic Settlement | St. George was founded in 1861 as a Mormon settlement and Brigham Young’s winter residence remains open today as a free museum. The city is named after Young’s cousin, George A. Smith, considered a “saint” after encouraging the consumption of potatoes to cure scurvy. St. George is also known as “Utah’s Dixie” due to its warm climate and cotton production. As you might expect, that nickname didn’t age well, prompting Dixie State University to change its name to Utah Tech University in 2022. | | 🎨 The Depth of Downtown | Downtown St. George is a unique mix of art, history, and culture. The area’s best hotel, the Advenire, is next to the Ancestor Square collection of shops and restaurants among historic structures. You’re also a short walk from the immaculate grounds of the St. George Utah Temple (the city’s most visible landmark), Thomas Judd’s candy store (the oldest operating business), and a series of street-corner sculptures that showcase the local art scene. | | 🏜️ The Great Outdoors | St. George markets itself as the gateway to Zion National Park, although it’s another hour’s drive to reach the nearest gates. Totally worth it, but four state parks are much closer. Snow Canyon is a scenic drive between red sandstone hills and petrified sand dunes. Sand Hollow is a reservoir surrounded by red sand for a beautifully weird experience. Quail Creek is a quiet, secluded beach with trees creeping out of the water. Gunlock is a more remote reservoir with waterfalls during the first half of the year. | | | | | Already have a road trip planned…but to Los Angeles? We talk about road trip stops between LA and Vegas on the pod today, and we promise there are some goodies (and oldies) in there. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧] | |
