| What Las Vegas's Talking About |
| | 👮 Metro Embraces New Technology | The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is determined to become the most high-tech police force in the nation, from Tesla cybertrucks and drones to license plate readers and yes, artificial intelligence. But who’s paying for it? City Cast Las Vegas looks at the scale, ambition, and finances behind the Metro’s mission to set an example — and perhaps a new standard — for combining law enforcement with technology. | | ⚡ BLM Pressed for Answers on Data Center
| Rep. Dina Titus (D), whose district covers Boulder City, wants to know more about how and why the Bureau of Land Management approved a data center on federal land in the area. The congresswoman also pressed BLM on holding public hearings on the project. [Nevada Current] | - More politics: Gov. Gavin Newsom is coming to Las Vegas on Thursday to campaign for
president Attorney General Aaron Ford, who’s running for governor here. [Politico] - And … Dean Heller, who used to represent the interests of Nevada as a U.S. Senator, is now an advisor for Kalshi, a prediction market platform that competes against the casino industry and is currently banned in the state. [Las Vegas Sun]
| | 🎰 Venetian Fined Millions for Banned Bookie | The Venetian reached a settlement with the Nevada Gaming Control Board, paying a penalty of $7.2 million after allowing an illegal bookmaker Mathew Bowyer to gamble on property before he was banned in 2024. Bowyer was released from federal prison in May, following a business relationship with an interpreter convicted of stealing millions from Dodgers baseball star Shohei Ohtani. [KSNV] | | 🧹 The Strip Is Due for a Deep Clean | County Commission Chair Michael Naft confirms what most of us have been thinking for a while: the Strip could use a good scrubbing. He’s pushing to expand overnight cleanup crews — which handle pedestrian bridges, trash bins, and other public spaces — from weekends and holidays to every night of the week. [KVVU] | |

| Will High-Speed Rail Ever Leave the Station? |
| | Fantasy line? (Brightline West) |
| More than two years after a ceremonial groundbreaking, the status of the Brightline West’s 218-mile high-speed rail line between Las Vegas and Southern California remains far from certain. The project is more than 15 billion short of its expanded $21 billion budget — and still waiting on approval of a $6 billion loan from the Trump administration. [Nevada Independent] | | Brightline blamed the rising budget on the growing demand for labor and materials, due in part to a boom in data centers, power plants, and other projects. [Victorville Daily Press] | | The company says it’s locked down six of nine infrastructure contracts to build the route. [Bloomberg] | | So far, little work has been done beyond field testing and early construction of the Las Vegas station near Las Vegas Boulevard and Warm Springs. [Las Vegas Review-Journal] | | Brightline enlisted German manufacturer Siemens Mobility to construct the train cars — and thwarted a legal challenge by Alstom Transportation that argued the deal violated Buy American requirements. [KTLA/Bloomberg Law] | | The project was originally tabbed for 2028 before being pushed back (at least) another year. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️] | | Think that’s bad? The California High-Speed Rail between Los Angeles and San Francisco had a “groundbreaking” in 2015 — seven years after it was approved by voters — but made little progress while the budget ballooned. The project is now hoping for new private investors while limiting the first phase of track to a route between Bakersfield and Merced 😴 [Smart Cities Dive] | | Despite polling well with Americans, high-speed rail has failed to materialize in this country due to inconsistent funding commitments, outdated infrastructure, and other obstacles. [CBS News] | | Brightline was successful in increasing ridership on its rail line between Miami and Orlando, but lingering debt has led to a crucial loan payment deadline this week. If Brightline Florida defaults, the subsidiary — which operates separately from Brightline West — could face bankruptcy or liquidation. [Smart Cities Dive] | |
