GOP Challenges Nevada Voting Law

Republican Party members filed a lawsuit in Carson City against the Secretary of State and other Democrats, challenging a state law that allows U.S. citizens born abroad to vote in Nevada — despite never having lived in the United States. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • The law, passed with overseas military families in mind, was signed in 2011 by Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval with no opposition. It’s actually an enactment of a federal law that dates back to the Reagan administration. [Brennan Center for Justice]
  • Nevada is home to more than 14,000 active-duty service members. About 8% of active-duty military families live outside the United States. [Military State Policy Source/Blue Star Families]
  • Similar lawsuits filed by Republicans in 2024 were tossed out of court in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. [NPR]
  • The legal move is the latest example of Republicans challenging the integrity of elections — and comes as the Supreme Court upheld the right of states to count mail ballots within a set number of days after an election when postmarked by Election Day. [Nevada Independent]

What Las Vegas's Talking About

💸 Little League Funds Spent at Strip Club?

The Central Little League of Las Vegas president was arrested on charges of stealing $64,000 from the youth sports organization. According to a police report, the money was spent on booze, adult entertainment, and erectile dysfunction pills — the established trifecta of a Las Vegas lifestyle. [KSNV]

🧑‍🎓 UNLV Unveils New Sports Biz Degree

The Vegas sports boom is so big, it’s now influencing the curriculum at UNLV. The university’s William F. Harrah College of Hospitality will offer the state’s first-ever undergraduate degree in sport hospitality management this fall. [Las Vegas Sun]

🅿️ Park MGM Rolls Out Parking Validation

Parking validation is something we tend to associate with Downtown more than the Strip. (Well, at least we used to.) But now the Park MGM is resurrecting the idea to woo locals. The resort is giving those with Nevada ID 20% off food and drinks (up to $500) and free parking with a minimum purchase of $75 (or $100 during special events) Sunday-Thursday. The deal is valid through Sept. 30. Not bad. Hopefully this is the start of a greater appreciation for locals 🤞 [KSNV]

  • There are still a few Strip hotels that offer outright free parking … but not many. [City Cast Las Vegas ✍️]

🪧 The Price to Protest

Have something to shout about? From Black Live Matter to No Kings, Las Vegas has seen its share of marches and protests — but it’s not as simple as picking up a sign and hitting the streets. City Cast Las Vegas welcomes our favorite legal guru, Dayvid Figler, and journalist Naoka Foreman to discuss the red tape and hefty price tag that comes with assembled free speech in our community.
