What Las Vegas's Talking About

😞 Slow Response to Horse Death

In a bizarre and disturbing story, a horse was found dead in front of an East Valley house after it was seen being dragged by a rope attached to a white pickup truck. To make matters worse, upset witnesses said they tried calling police, but were redirected to animal control who didn’t show up until the following day. [KLAS]

🚨 Mass Shooting Thwarted at Sunset Station?

A woman accused of threatening to carry out a mass shooting was arrested without incident in the parking garage at Sunset Station. Her car contained firearms — and we’re glad police didn’t wait to see if she planned to really use them or not. [KTNV]

💣 Parking Fee Sparks Violent Threat

According to an attorney, a woman made a bomb threat at a Downtown parking garage after she was surprised with a $14 charge upon exiting. (Validation, not violence, is the answer.) [KSNV]

💰 Boulder Highway Edges Strip in Profits

Despite earning about $20 billion more in revenue, Strip casinos were actually less profitable than those on Boulder Highway in 2025. Time to trim those expenses — or hike the resort fees 🫣 [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • And that’s even with the Eastside Cannery no longer around. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

Keep Roads Safe: Slow Down. Move Over.

This Fourth of July weekend, AAA reminds Nevada drivers to watch the roadside. When you see a stopped vehicle, slow down, and move over. Let's make sure every traveler reaches their destination safely this holiday.

A Trans Athlete Ban in Nevada? It’s Complicated.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state laws barring transgender girls and women from playing on school athletic teams do not violate the Constitution. [Associated Press]

So where does that leave Nevada? Gov. Lombardo backed a ballot initiative this year to limit transgender participation in school sports, but the proposal failed to meet the qualifications for inclusion on this year’s ballot. The Republican governor is promising to bring the issue forward in the 2027 legislative session or reintroduce it as a ballot measure in 2028 — if he wins reelection this year. [Nevada Independent]

Just last year, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association reversed a 2014 policy that allowed transgender students in high schools to play for teams that aligned with their gender identity, affecting more than 120 high schools in the state. The NIAA has not said how many students – if any – were affected by the change, and advocates question if these bans conflict with the state’s equal rights law, approved by voters in 2022. [KTNV]

The UNR women’s volleyball team forfeited a game against San Jose state in 2024 when a majority of its players refused to play against a transgender opponent. At the time, the university claimed to back the players’ decision, but not the protest against trans athletes. Since then, players say they were pressured by school officials to play and were even threatened with legal action. The NCAA adopted bans on trans athletes earlier this year, following an executive order by President Trump. [Las Vegas Review-Journal/New York Post]

The ruling comes on the final day of a headline-generating term for the Supreme Court, which also upheld birthright citizenship, loosened campaign finance rules, and preserved states’ rights to count mail ballots after Election Day. [CBS News]
