Your Daily Guide

😀 Hey! We’re taking tomorrow off while Las Vegas celebrates Juneteenth.

That means you get to play the weekly news quiz a day early 👇 We’ve also got some Father’s Day freebies to help you save a few bucks while celebrating Sunday.

What Las Vegas's Talking About

⚡ Henderson Taps the Brakes on Data Centers

Henderson City Council is considering a moratorium of 180 days on new data center permit applications. The break would give the city time to study up on the environmental effects of such facilities, although Mayor Michelle Romero wants an amendment added to end the pause earlier if enough information is gathered. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]

  • Michelle Romero acknowledged she fell short of the 50% vote needed to ensure reelection in last week’s primary, leading to a runoff in November with her next closest challenger, former police chief Hollie Chadwick. [Nevada Current]

🏒 Knights Waste No Time, Hire a New Coach

The Vegas Golden Knights will host a news conference today to formally introduce new coach Ryan Craig, replacing temporary coach John Tortorella, who complicated things by suddenly winning games and leading the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. Craig is already in the family, so to speak. He spent three seasons in charge of the Henderson Silver Knights, a minor-league affiliate, and was an assistant coach for the Vegas Golden Knights when the team won the Stanley Cup. [KSNV]

💸 Floyd Mayweather’s Check Is No Good in Vegas

Floyd Mayweather's nickname is “Money,” but apparently, he doesn’t have enough of it. The boxing champ is charged with writing a bad check for $200,000 when buying a watch from Gold and Beyond near the Strip. Mayweather is also facing a challenge by the IRS to collect more than $7 million in unpaid taxes. [ESPN]

👄 The Sphere Shivers with Anticipation

The Sphere is still in the movie biz after the success of “The Wizard of Oz.” Up next in 2027 — “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (which feels like a value option until the Sphere decides to splurge on “Star Wars” rights). It’s a ballsy move to Sphere-ify a not-so-family-friendly, gender-bending, campy cult classic that was a notorious box office flop upon release. So you gotta give the executives who approved this credit for taking a chance 👍 [Variety]

  • City Cast Las Vegas had some thoughts to share about doing “The Time Warp” on the Sphere’s steep stadium seating, plus the trouble with data centers and the latest local James Bead Award winner in today’s news roundup. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

What to Look For (and Look Out For) in Vintage Homes

What makes vintage mid-century homes in Las Vegas worth buying?

These homes offer irreplaceable original details like terrazzo floors, clerestory windows, and tongue-and-groove ceilings that would cost a fortune to recreate today. Built with old-growth lumber and masonry on generously sized lots, they reflect a philosophy of quality and livability that modern construction simply does not replicate.

What should buyers watch out for when purchasing a vintage home?

Older electrical, flat roofs, single-pane windows, and aging pool equipment are common considerations but none are deal-breakers with proper budgeting. The right mindset is that of a steward, not a warranty-seeker. An informed buyer who accounts for ongoing upkeep is getting something genuinely irreplaceable, not a liability.

🥃 Free Stuff for Father’s Day in Las Vegas

City Cast Las Vegas wants to wish all the dads out there — hello Wayne! 👋 — a fantastic Father’s Day this weekend. You can score a few freebies on Sunday too 👀

🥃 Bottiglia at Green Valley Ranch is giving dads a free Old Fashioned. It pairs well with the 14 oz. prime ribeye, which is $58.

🍺 Heathstone at the Red Rock Resort is giving dads a free draft beer with the purchase of a meal. Go with the special (baby back ribs, cornbread, and baked beans for $32) and a $13 peanut butter cup cigar for dessert.

🔥 Bruce Kalman of SoulBelly BBQ is hosting a virtual Father’s Day grilling class at noon on Saturday, June 20. The price is $50, but you can enter a contest to win a complimentary spot by sending the direct message #pitmaster to @soulbellybbqlv on Instagram by midnight tonight (June 18).

🥃 The Las Vegas Distillery is welcoming all dads with a complimentary barrel-aged Old Fashioned on Father’s Day.

😋 Don’s Prime steakhouse is giving dads a dram of Glenlivet 18 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky on the house, 5-10 p.m. at the Fontainebleau (which also has free parking for locals right now).

🏊 Free admission for dads at the Cowabunga Bay water park in Henderson with the purchase of at least one other regular day ticket at the gate.

👀 Wakuda at the Venetian is giving dads a free Harajuku cocktail (which is kinda like a Manhattan and Negroni in one) and some of the restaurant’s steak seasoning to take home. If you want to splurge, a six-ounce A4 Japanese wagyu tenderloin is $150 for Father’s Day.

🍣 This isn’t specifically a Father’s Day deal, but it happens to fall on the holiday: Su Casa is giving everyone a free signature roll with the purchase of an entree on every Sunday in June.
