With exhibits exploring colonialism, indigenous roots, and traditions that have been a part of Filipino culture for centuries, it’s designed to be an eye-opening holistic view of Filipino culture and history. [KTNV] | | 💍 Marrying For Money (Literally) | A local woman took Vegas’ “marriage capital of the world” title a bit too literally, allegedly wedding multiple men in an elaborate immigration fraud scheme. Authorities say she raked in thousands of dollars by charging non-citizens to tie the knot so they could secure legal permanent residency. [Las Vegas Review-Journal] | | 🏨 Vanderpump Rules the Strip | Reality TV star Lisa Vanderpump officially christened her grandest venture yet last week with a star-studded grand opening on the Strip. | 🏠 From Slots to Subdivisions | A few months after the Eastside Cannery hotel-casino was imploded, homebuilding giant Lennar Corp has revealed plans to turn the 29-acre site into a 279-home subdivision. It’s the latest domino to fall in a massive shift across the valley, where historic casino locations are being traded for more housing. [Las Vegas Review-Journal] | - Gone too soon: Unlike historic Strip icons that faced the dynamite after decades of wear, the Eastside Cannery was a relative baby. Opened in 2008, it closed 12 years later when the pandemic hit and never reopened. It’s one of the youngest hotel-casinos in Vegas to be completely demolished. [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
- A “bit-of-a-downer”: Imploding a casino is a Vegas ritual, often marked by fireworks and celebrations of what’s coming next. That’s not what happened here. The owners robbed the public of the event by opting to do the demolition in the dead of night, with no public access. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]
- A growing pattern: This isn’t an isolated flip. Southern Nevada is increasingly eyeing abandoned gaming footprints to help ease the housing crunch. Local officials have already approved a massive residential and commercial redevelopment of the old Texas Station and Fiesta Rancho sites in North Las Vegas. [KLAS]
