What Las Vegas's Talking About

🤑 State Fined $2M for Mental Health Treatment Delays

Nevada was slapped with a $858,000 court-ordered fine this week for its inability to provide timely mental health care to criminal defendants, pushing the total in fines accrued over the last two years above $2 million. [Nevada Independent]

  • The state broke ground last week on a new facility in Southern Nevada that will add about 300 beds to the state's capacity to treat criminal defendants. It is expected to open in 2029. [KVVU]

🩺 New Medical Team Cares for Unhoused

The Southern Nevada Health District’s street medicine team has treated 130 people since its formation in November. From supplying prescriptions to wound supplies, the four-person team offers initial and follow-up care to clients, though it can be challenging to find patients weeks after an interaction. 🇺🇸 Huge American Flag Removed at Hoover Dam

The flag, spanning the length of a football field and placed to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, was removed for repairs after an unexpected tear. It’s not the flag's first snafu: Just a few days after its Memorial Day weekend debut, the Bureau of Reclamation temporarily removed it due to strong winds. [USA Today]

Today's Big Picture

🗳️ Takeaways (So Far) From the Primary

We now have a better sense of where things stand after heading to the polls, so let’s recap some of the trends that stood out thus far:

⭐ The Trump endorsement remains golden: The president’s picks largely advanced, including retired Lt. Col. David Flippo (R) in the 2nd Congressional District, Sen. Carrie Buck (R) in the 1st District, video game composer Marty O'Donnell (R) in the 3rd District, and Adriana Guzmán Fralick (R) in the race for Attorney General. 👎 Trump's pardon is not as alluring: Suspended Nye County Justice of the Peace Michele Fiore is more than 15 points behind top vote-getter Michael Foley for the position. Fiore was pardoned by Trump after her 2024 conviction on federal wire fraud charges. [Review-Journal / Nevada Independent]

💃 Votes for Women (Candidates, That Is): Women made a strong showing in state and local races, including the following:

  • Las Vegas Ward 6 Council: Nancy Brune won more than 50% of the vote against two primary opponents, including police union head Steve Grammas.
  • North Las Vegas Mayor: Assm. Daniele Monroe-Moreno (D) led Councilmember Scott Black in the race for mayor as the two appear headed toward a runoff in the fall.
  • Henderson Mayor: Incumbent Michelle Romero has more than double the votes of rival Hollie Chadwick, the former police chief, but is just barely above the 50% required to avoid a November runoff.
  • State Attorney General: State Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro (D) will face Adriana Guzmán Fralick (R) in November.
  • Democratic Primary for State Treasurer: Tya Mathis-Coleman advanced to the general election over opponent Assm. Joe Dalia.
  • Democratic Primary for Congressional District 2: Former Assembly Majority Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson trounced wealthy investor Greg Kidd. [Nevada Independent]

🤷 Voter Turnout Was Fine: As of Wednesday morning, the total turnout for in-person voting was more than 177,000, and about 230,000 mail-in ballots were returned (though not all have been cured yet). Assuming all ballots are accepted, that puts turnout at 19.7%. That’s not surprising for a midterm primary election, especially one without a U.S. Senate race on the ballot. But it means races could be decided by a relatively small number of voters. [Nevada Current / Nevada Secretary of State]
