Get used to triple-digit temperatures — at least until Saturday, when we trade the heat for wind.

Today's Big Picture

⚖️ Teen Arrested in South Point Horse Stabbings

District Attorney Steve Wolfson wants to charge a teen accused of stabbing three horses at the South Point as an adult, citing the seriousness of the crime. None of the injuries are considered life threatening. [KSNV]

  • The suspect was a competitor during a barrel racing event and is believed to have used a knife. The attacks took place at 2 a.m. Saturday in a barn that all competitors had access to enter. [KTNV]
  • The Henderson owner of one of the horses says the knife just missed the jugular, which would’ve been fatal. Another wound was a half-inch away from the cervical spine. [Hailey Krahenbuhl/Facebook]
  • Another owner said her horse was stabbed three times in different parts of the body, but is stitched up and will make a full recovery. The owner also said she didn’t blame South Point for what happened. [@quarter_circle_seven/Instagram]
  • A Wyoming horse owner said the teen suspect reached out a month ago, “stalking horses” and asking to borrow one for a competition. [Cowboy State Daily]
  • City Cast Las Vegas takes a closer look at the horse stabbing case during today’s news roundup, along with a bid to buy a majority interest in MGM Resorts and the arrival of the A’s, who are playing in Summerlin next week. Are they one of us yet? [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

What Las Vegas's Talking About

🦠 Hantavirus Hits Close to Home

Our region’s first hantavirus death was reported in Kingman, Arizona, just 100 miles from Las Vegas. But here’s the “good” news — it appears to be the Sin Nombre virus, not the more transmissible Andes virus connected to a recent cruise ship outbreak. [KLAS]

  • The Southern Nevada Health District is outlining its priorities for the next five years. The big problems: insurance coverage is down and overdose deaths are up. [KTNV]

🥱 Primary Season Off to a Slow Start

Turnout for early primary voting is pretty close to dismal, with just 8% of Nevada voters showing up so far. Washoe County is outpacing Clark County with its GOP primary almost a lock to determine who will replace retiring Congressman Mark Amodei. [Nevada Independent]

🏒 Mayors Square Off Over Stanley Cup

Technically, the T-Mobile Arena isn’t even in the City of Las Vegas, but that’s not stopping Mayor Shelley Berkley from placing a bet with Raleigh mayor Janet Cowell over the Stanley Cup Finals, which got underway last night. If the Vegas Golden Knights win the series, Berkley gets some Carolina barbecue. If the Carolina Hurricanes win, Cowell gets a sequined jersey to rep her team. (The food sounds like a way better prize.) The losing mayor also has to wear the opposing team’s jersey during a city council meeting. [KVVU]

  • DirecTV customers aren't able to watch the Stanley Cup finals due to a contract dispute with Scripps, the parent company of local ABC affiliate KTNV Channel 13. [Associated Press]
  • If that's you, the Knights won Game One, 5-4. [CBS Sports]
