| | What Las Vegas's Talking About |
| 🚨 Two Dead in Grocery Store Shooting | Witnesses heard five to eight gunshots just before noon Tuesday at the Smith’s near Silverado Ranch and Maryland Parkway. Two people were killed. The suspect, who appeared to be carrying two firearms, had a previous relationship and children with one of the victims, according to police. We want to give a big thumbs up to a pair of bystanders who tackled the shooter before police could arrive. [Las Vegas Review-Journal] | | ☀️ Volunteers Rescue Dogs From Outdoor Camp | Outreach teams took in 18 dogs from a North Las Vegas homeless camp, and will make the animals available for foster care soon. Volunteers say it was hard for the owners to give up their pets, but it’s just too hot for dogs to be living outdoors. [KTNV] | | | 🗳️ Alexis Hill: Nevada Taxes a “Death by a Thousand Cuts” | Nevada doesn’t have a state income tax, but that’s not stopping Alexis Hill from making tax fairness a centerpiece issue in her underdog campaign to become the Democratic nominee for governor — from car registration and sales taxes to “backwards” property taxes and yes, data center abatements. The Washoe County commissioner talks to City Cast Las Vegas about her uphill primary challenge, including what it means to campaign in different parts of Nevada and a “public debate” she plans on holding, whether rival Aaron Ford shows up or not. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧] | | | | | | 🏒 Let’s Cross ‘Women’s Hockey’ Off the Checklist | Yet another sports team is coming to town. The Professional Women’s Hockey League is expected to announce a Las Vegas expansion franchise today. While all teams operate under a sole league ownership, Golden Knights boss Bill Foley is involved, which suggests the team will play at the T-Mobile Arena. Don’t doubt the power of the puck. PWHL teams averaged more than 9,000 fans per game last season. [New York Times] |

| | | | ⛽ Federal Pause On Gas Tax Might Not Help Nevada | As the Iran War raises fuel prices throughout the world, President Trump is proposing a pause on federal gas taxes to help American drivers. Even Democrats are on board with the idea, but it won't help Nevadans much, if at all. For some reason, we have a law that requires a state tax to replace any federal tax on gas that’s reduced or eliminated in equal amounts. [KVVU] | - Gov. Lombardo could call a special session to repeal that state tax if needed. [KTNV]
- That suspension would further deplete the state highway fund, which is financed by gas taxes and is already struggling due to the popularity of electric vehicles. [Governing]
- Nevada has among the highest gas prices in the nation, averaging $5.24 a gallon yesterday for regular unleaded. [AAA]
- Federal gas taxes are collected at the wholesale level, so any relief at American pumps wouldn’t appear immediately anyway. [Associated Press]
- President Trump said “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation,” when discussing the importance of keeping a nuclear weapon out of Iranian hands. [NBC News]
- The Trump Administration rescinded a Biden-era rule to promote conservation on Interior Department land. The decision helps pave the way for new oil drilling in states like Nevada, which have high concentrations of taxpayer-owned land. [Associated Press]
