| What Las Vegas's Talking About |
| 🏜️ Whose at Fault in Earthquake Risk? | There was a magnitude 4.4 earthquake about 60 miles north of Las Vegas Wednesday. Did you even notice? Probably not. But despite a major earthquake never hitting us directly in the modern era, Vegas is surrounded by faults on all sides. The biggest risk is west of us in Death Valley. Hypothetically, a magnitude 7 quake near Vegas could cause about $21 billion in damage. [Los Angeles Times] | | 🚰 Nevada Offers to Use Less Water (Again) | Nevada, Arizona, and California are offering to make more water cuts, which would add up to about 20% of what's currently allotted to the three lower basin states. That’s worse than it sounds, since Southern Nevada only uses about two-thirds of its allowed water to begin with. (We’re really good at conservation and recycling.) And it’s probably better than letting the federal government sort it out — which is what happens if the states can’t settle on a plan. [KLAS] | | 😢 Dolly Drops Vegas Residency | After already postponing shows from late last year to September, Dolly Parton has cancelled her Caesars Palace residency altogether. We give the singer credit for doing the right thing and putting her health first. We wish her the best. [Variety] | | 🔥 A Parade to Celebrate Las Vegas | The Helldorado Days Parade returns to Downtown Las Vegas this Saturday to celebrate our city’s roots. It’s one of the best things you can do in May, but does the event overestimate our role and presence in the Old West? 🤔 City Cast Las Vegas loves to chat about history, so we ask a tough question: Was Las Vegas really, truly, a bona fide Wild West town? | | 🚝 Readers have thoughts to share, beginning with plans to repurpose monorail tracks for the Vegas Loop system of Tesla shuttles. | | The Boring Company taking over the Las Vegas Monorail, is so disappointing. Las Vegans have been begging for a light rail system similar to Salt Lake City, but instead we’re about to get a slow, unreliable, and expensive solution that still doesn’t expand public transport beyond the Strip. It feels like the city and county are just laughing in our faces at this point. How infuriating. | — Mikaela C. | | | 🔮 For some, the closure of David Copperfield’s Vegas show couldn’t come soon enough, especially after the magician was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women. | | I was saddened to see David Copperfield given even more space in this newsletter! … He doesn't deserve to be mentioned in any publication. | — DD G. | | | 🍋🟩 And at least one person has a problem with Cinco de Mayo. | | Cinco de Mayo is not a celebrated holiday in Mexico. The anniversary of the Battle of Pueblo is celebrated here due to a marketing ploy started by Corona. It's a totally manufactured holiday. Mexicans do not even get the day off. I lived there for 10 years. I like your newsletter, thanks. | — B.T. | | I had to keep that last part in. And yes, you’re right about the Corona stuff 🍺 |

🎁 Guess who’s getting that Oxford Pennant? Caroline A. and Erin J., who just signed up to be City Cast Neighbors. Erin even got on my good side with the following note: | | "Rob puts out a great daily! Love his take, and I find the upcoming activities to be informative. It is hard to find local events, rather than overpriced ones for tourists, online. More importantly, we support local businesses!” | | Thank you! 🙏 |
