| What Las Vegas's Talking About |
| | Closing time. (Rob Kachelriess/City Cast Las Vegas) |
| 🍽️ Last Call at The Sundry | Saturday is the final day for The Sundry, leaving UnCommons without an anchor tenant. The food hall started strong a year ago, but scaled down over time, losing everything that made it great in the first palace. Two sources tell City Cast Las Vegas that Casamigos founder Rande Gerber is involved in new ownership of The Sundry and a different concept is planned for the space in 2025. I’d say go check out The Sundry one more time this weekend, but the name partnerships have already been replaced with in-house “brands” and a skeletal menu. | | | 👽 Monolith May Be Nothing New | Whether it came from aliens or not, that mysterious monolith at Gass Peak might have been sitting there for years. A website that tracks monoliths (yes, there’s a need for such a thing) first detected what appears to be the same monolith back in 2020. That’s the same year other notable monoliths started popping up, including one in Utah and another on Fremont Street (although that one came from a “known origin”). That could still be aliens, right??? [Las Vegas Review-Journal] | | 🌎 Happy AnniverSPHEREy | July 4th is America’s birthday. It’s also the birthday of sorts for the Sphere, which activated its exterior on the holiday last year. To mark the occasion, the Exosphere will now stream live online with custom music that can also be heard on site. The Sphere also announced a six-act Exosphere presentation for July 4 at 9:30 and 11:40 p.m. [Sphere Entertainment Co.] | | 🚌 A.I. Detecting Guns at Bus Stations | This is not your father’s metal detector. The RTC is adding software to digital security cameras to scan and detect weapons with artificial intelligence. So far, the technology is only being used at transit centers, not in buses. [KTNV] |

| Railroad Cottages in Downtown Las Vegas |
| | Summer is the season for lemonade, an American tradition that goes back decades. Just look at this historical photo, which shows four children working a lemonade stand in the summer of 1932. It was taken on 2nd Street, which is now Casino Center Boulevard. | | 🚂 Look in the background and you’ll see a couple of the 64 railroad cottages built by the Las Vegas Land & Water Company for Union Pacific Railroad employees who worked the San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake train lines. | | 🏡 The cottages were built between 1909 and 1911. Most were demolished, but you can still see one in its original location at 629 S. Casino Center Boulevard, converted to an insurance and bail service. Drive down the 3rd Street side of the block and you’ll see former cottages converted into Cupid’s Wedding Chapel and another bail bond service (with a front exterior extension) while a third appears to be a private residence or office. | | 🌳 Four railroad cottages were relocated to the Springs Preserve and added to the Boomtown 1905 walking exhibit. The interior of one was restored to reflect domestic life in the early 1900s, long before televisions and microwaves came along. | | 💰 The preservation effort was led by the Las Vegas Rotary Club at a cost of $30,000 per house. Much of the work was done at night, removing lights and blocking traffic to transport the homes in full to the Springs Preserve. |

| | “As a firearms owner myself, there’s no legitimate use for a bump stock. What they are tailor made for is a mass shooting.” | Sen. Martin Heinrich | (D) New Mexico |
| | Gun Stocks, a Verdict Against Real Water, and a Celebrity Jury Sighting | The Supreme Court overturned a gun stock ban and a bill to keep the devices illegal failed to proceed in the U.S. Senate. So what’s next? John Langeler of KLAS 8 News Now joins City Cast Las Vegas co-host Dayvid Figler and executive producer Sonja Cho Swanson to discuss why the issue resonates so strongly in Las Vegas. The Friday news roundup also looks at a water bottle lawsuit and a very special guest in the local Las Vegas jury pool. | | | |

Forget about The Sundry this weekend. You’re better off enjoying the final day of Restaurant Week or squeezing in a visit to Retro by Voltaggio, a playful concept at Mandalay Bay that wraps up a one-year “culinary residency” on June 29 😋 |
