Your Daily Guide

Good morning! Here’s some refreshing news: Las Vegas is apparently one of the few big cities that both Democrats (who adore big cities) and Republicans (not so much) believe is among the safest. Well, yeah. Nothing like a giant eyeball scanning the streets to make you feel secure.

What Las Vegas's Talking About

🥊 This Round to the Teachers

A judge on Tuesday dismissed the school district’s request for an injunction to prevent the union from striking; this was based on union threats of “work actions” should the district not offer a suitable contract. The judge said she can’t issue an injunction without a clear indication there will be a strike. But, hey, at least some lawyers got paid. [Review-Journal]

  • Context: On today’s podcast, Nevada Current journalist April Corbin Girnus delves deeper into the union vs district battles. [City Cast Las Vegas 🎧]

🧢 Always Next Year

💰 Huh. Funny How That Worked Out …

Two years ago the Nevada Supreme Court declared a $1 DMV “technology” fee to be unconstitutional. Many Nevadans were eligible for refunds of a buck or three. The catch: You had to request it in person. At the DMV. Surprisingly, few did. So the state keeps the $4 million that remains. [Nevada Independent]

Get Help Smogging Your Old Car

The Problem: Seeing the number of old vehicles registered as “classic” jump from about 5,000 to 32,000, the state DMV knew it had a problem — people were getting classic plates to avoid smog checks. Bad for air quality.

The Solution: New rules went into effect this year — to designate your car as a “classic,” it needs to have classic vehicle insurance. Otherwise, it must pass an emissions check.

New Problem: Some owners of old cars just can’t afford the extensive repairs needed to make them meet smog standards.

New Solution: So the county has created a smog-check assistance program. If you qualify, you can get up to $975 in free repairs.“The last thing we want to do is jam people up,” says Kevin MacDonald from the Clark County Department of Environment & Sustainability.

Who’s Eligible: People whose car’s model year is 1968-1999, or who have a “classic rod” plate; an income that’s 275% of the federal poverty limit, or proof of enrollment in a Nevada assistance program; a failed smog check from the last 12 months.

Then What: Gather documentation of the above and either call 702-805-5882 or apply online. If you’re approved, take your vehicle to a designated repair site.

Chart showing statistical breakdown of responses

Here’s what you had to say. (Sonja Cho Swanson/City Cast Las Vegas)

Not surprisingly, we received a lot of responses to our query about whether people should take their dogs into restaurants: More than 60 of you wrote in — passionate yet (mostly) reasonable. You can see the basic breakdown above, and below are a few of the many, many comments. Thanks to everyone who wrote in.

Laurie B.: “I love dogs. They can go anywhere as far as I’m concerned.”

Gary F.: “Dogs in restaurants? Absolutely yes. As long as they are well behaved. Kids in restaurants? Absolutely yes. As long as they are well behaved.”

Brenda C.: “A big NO! The only exception would be a person who needs a therapy animal. These emotional support ones have gotten out of control!”

Don B.: “Which breed of dog hair tastes best?”

Donna M. Vetri: “As a mother of a, or many, dogs in my life — yes, all dogs should be able to frequent restaurants. … Not everything in this world revolves around humans!”

James P. Reza: “No, please. … I don't think any owner can guarantee that their dog is ‘harmless’ or ‘friendly’ 100% of the time. … Clark County/Southern Nevada Health District permits ADA-trained animals inside restaurants, but prohibits any animal including ‘emotional support’ animals. … Even when outdoors, the SNHD has regulations in place to protect healthy food service and patrons …”

Confused by the CCSD Drama? We’ve Got You Covered.

Southern Nevada’s largest teachers’ union has given the school district until Saturday to resolve a dispute over teacher pay. But the two sides are also fighting a legal battle over whether the “work actions” the union has threatened would constitute an illegal strike (a ruling yesterday appears to be a win for the union). April Corbin Girnus, a reporter at the Nevada Current, joins co-host Vogue Robinson to give us the play by play.

Lastly, says here the B-52s have been working with rescued chimps to create artwork based on their album covers, and that you can view these works at the Punk Rock Museum for a week, beginning Friday. Folks, that's just too perfect to fact-check.
